Flight Radiotelephony Operator's LicenceA requirement for the PPL/LAPL, the FRTOL authorises you to operate an Aircraft Radio Station in a UK registered aircraft.
What is a FRTOL?
The Flight Radiotelephony Operator's Licence (FRTOL) authorises you to operate an Aircraft Radio Station in a UK registered aircraft. It can be held as a standalone licence, but is normally held in conjunction with another Flight Crew licence such as an EASA LAPL or EASA PPL.
How long is it valid for?
A UK FRTOL issued after 17 September 2012, is valid for life, provided that your English Language Proficiency endorsement is current. FRTOLs issued prior to 17 September 2012 have a ten year validity and must be re-applied for on expiry, if you still require the use of a FRTOL.
What is English Language Proficiency?
English Language proficiency endorsement (level 4 or better) is now a requirement for all holders of a FRTOL. Your language skills will be rated on a scale of 1 to 6 (as defined by ICAO). You can read more about Language Proficiency on this CAA site.
** There is a 24 month validity period to this test.
